Magnum Cinema: Photographs from 50 Years of Movie-Making by Alain Bergala,
The photographers from Magnum have worked with movie-makers since the agency was founded half a century ago. Robert Capa, a founder of what has become the world's most prestigious picture agency, was a close friend of John Huston and, with him, began to combine the talents of great photographers with those of great directors and actors -- a tradition that has continued to the present day. These partnerships are properly celebrated for the first time in a book that is filled with powerful images of such legends as Clint Eastwood, Marilyn Monroe, Ingrid Bergman, James Dean, Clark Gable and many others. The roll-call of over fifty leading photographers includes Eve Arnold, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Raymond Depardon, Philippe Halsman, Elliott Erwitt, David 'Chim' Seymour and Dennis Stock.

Magnum Cinema: Photographs from 50 Years of Movie-Making by Alain Bergala,
The photographers associated with Magnum have worked with movie-makers since its creation nearly 50 years ago. Robert Capa, one of the founders of what has become the world's most prestigious picture agency, had many friends in the film business - including Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Billy Wilder and, particularly, John Huston - which gave him, and through him other Magnum photographers, access to the charmed world of Hollywood. This connection with the film world has continued to the present day and widened to include movie-makers all over the world. The resulting on- and off-set photographs gathered together for the first time in this beautifully presented book include intimate portraits of such screen legends as Marilyn Monroe, Clint Eastwood, James Dean and Clark Gable, as well as of outstanding directors, including Alfred Hitchcock, Carol Reed, Francois Truffaut and Andrel Tarkovsky. The roll call of photographers is equally distinguished - Eve Arnold, Henri Cartler-Bresson, Josef Koudelka, Eugene Smith and Dennis Stock, for example - making this a book for all those who love photography as well as an intimate and enjoyable glimpse of cinema history.

In 1839 Jacques Daguerre developed a method of photography, but delayed announcing it and so was not recognized as its inventor. The word comes from the Greek words photos ("light"), and graphis ("stylus", "paintbrush") or graphê, together meaning "drawing with light" or "representation by means of lines", "drawing". Photographers control the camera to expose the light recording material (usually film) to light.
